What is Text Expander

For example, you can type thwww (keyword) on most apps, and Typing Hero will replace it with https://typinghero.app (text).

Why Use Typing Hero

Text Expander app like Typing Hero helps you in many ways when it comes to typing on your smartphone. These are some of the benefits.

Who Should Use Typing Hero

Anyone spending a reasonable amount of time typing on an Android smartphone will benefit from using Typing Hero.

The following are some use cases for professional in certain fields.

Getting Started

Terminology

Snippet

A Snippet a combination of Text and Keyword.

Text is any content that you type frequently. It could be something simple, such as your email address, or phone number. It could also be something more involved to type, such as responding to support tickets, or typing complex medical terms.

Keyword is a short text that you assign for a particular Text. It is what you type instead of the content in the Text explained above.

Service

Typing Hero is the kind of app that is useless on its own. It is only useful when it can do its job in all apps that you use often.

To be able to replace Keyword with its associated Text when you’re using other apps, Typing Hero needs to run in background all the time. Hence, Typing Hero comes with a Service.

When the Service is running, it can detect if you’re typing a Keyword, and then replace it with its associated Text.

Installation

To install Typing Hero, ONLY get it from Google Play. Typing Hero has never been distributed through other sites other than Google Play.

Installing Typing Hero using APK file downloaded from other sites exposes you to security risks. The APK file could have been tampered with the intention of stealing your data.

Battery Optimization

For Typing Hero to be able to do its job, it needs to run in background all the time.

However, since Android version 6.0, Android comes with two features called Doze and App Standby to help preserve battery life. Those feature are designed to prevent apps from running in the background all the time.

Unfortunately, there are more bad news. Since Android is used by a lot of smartphone manufacturer, most of them are adding additional battery optimization features that are more aggressive, rendering most apps running in background useless.

Depending on Android version running on your device, there are different ways to resolve this issue.

Stock Android

If you’re using Nexus, Pixel, and Android One devices, it means you’re running Stock Android. The steps to ensure Typing Hero service can run in background all the time are as follow.

  1. Tap and hold Typing Hero icon in your favorite launcher, and tap on the highlighted icon (or its equivalent in your favorite launcher app) to see the application info

  2. Tap on Battery as highlighted

  6. Tap on Search icon as highlighted

  7. Type typing hero to quickly find Typing Hero app, and tap on Typing Hero below as highlighted

  8. Select Don't optimize as highlighted

  9. Ensure the status is changed to Not optimized as highlighted

Nonstock Android

If you are using devices from manufacturers like Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Nokia, Sony, HTC, or others that are not part of Android One program, it means you are running Nonstock Android; a version of Stock Android with a lot of modifications on top.

One of the modifications is aggressive battery saving mechanism, which usually prevent Services from running in background all the time.

The steps to allow Typing Hero running in background all the time is different from one manufacturer to another. But, the general idea is the same:

Please follow the steps specific for your device manufacturers.

If you are using third party app, such as Greenify, it is assumed you know what you’re doing, and you know how to resolve it.

Configuration

Typing Hero is designed with one principle in mind: simplicity. As a result, Typing Hero doesn’t come with of many configuration, or multiple ways to do one thing. Instead, a lot of thinking was put to make sure the default configuration makes sense.

Security

Snippets are stored only on your device. However, the database isn’t protected using industry standard encryption.

You are warned to not create Snippets containing sensitive information, such as password or PIN.

Typing Hero is not a replacement for a good password manager app, such as Bitwarden or 1Password.

Incompatible Apps

While Typing Hero works with most Android apps, there are various apps that must use nonstandard text input component to provide its basic functionalities. The following is an incomplete list of apps that are known to be incompatible.

As seen in the list above, most of those apps must display rich text, as well as pinch gesture to zoom in and out. Those functionalities are not supported by standard text input component provided by Android. Hence, a nonstandard text input component is created in order to support that.

To workaround this limitation, Typing Hero comes with a Premium feature called Snippet Copier. It allows one to quickly find and copy a Snippet when using one of those incompatible apps.
